BACKGROUND
Overview
DWS Dental is a dental access provider powered by their parent company, RDL*. They basically help patients find the correct healthcare at a price they can afford. RDL came up me and the development team I work with to ask for help creating a mobile app.
Criteria
With my design guidance, we created an app with the following criteria in order of importance: a home page with quick access to the other features, a loyalty program page with referral history, a dental plan/insurance page, and a fee schedule list with price comparisons & balances, and a provider list with doctor names & location.
Challenges
Because this app was new, I was able to take liberty on everything in design:
Create a cohesive IA with colors, fronts, and branding
Design intuitive interfaces that allow customers to accomplish their goals flawlessly

RESEARCH
Discovery
Based on the project brief from the business, and the user flow, I identified a couple of tasks that users would want to accomplish while using the app. This was to ensure I was able to fully base my design decisions on the business and their customers. Conducting a user pattern exercise, I connected certain features that helped me define the information architecture and organize them into wireframes.
User Stories
“I want to be able to show my insurance card as soon as I open the app, so that I am not fumbling through my phone or wallet.”
“I want to search and filter through my list of providers, so that I easily find the right doctor for me.”
“I want to see all my referral gift options, so that I know if I should continue saving my points or not.”
“I want there to be a way to renew or upgrade my insurance from the app, so that I do not have to go anywhere else.”

DEFINITION
Exploration
The components of the mobile app are meant to evoke cleanliness and transparency while exiting a user to refer his or her friends and family to the insurance. Cleanliness is an important look and feel because the business is based on hygiene, and the importance of transparency is stressed because the user experience must be simple and accessible to everyone.

DELIVERY
Dashboard Design
The screen I started designing was the Dashboard page because this is where a user will visit most often, spend the most time, and it displays the most reusable components in the system. The business requirements indicated that there be a possible space for advertisements, and the users required a quick view of their insurance card.

DELIVERY
Referral / Loyalty Program
Having a loyalty program for referrals was very important for the business, as this was the backbone of this application; it was the spark that ignited the flame of creating an app in the first place! I even took the pleasure of giving the screen more pizzaz with some confetti, which the client found stylish and fun.
Design cont.
I kept my designs consistent, staying aware of reusable components and other style guidelines for a seamless hand-off to the developers. With semi-weekly standup meetings, some changes were made along the way in accordance to requests.

IDEAS
Future Additions
These are features that the stakeholders and/or users desired, some of which were added to the deliverables and then reconsidered for the MVP. The developers and I agreed that we add these into the incremental developments of the existing product.

CONCLUSION
A New Adventure
Working with insurance company was a new venture for me, and I would do it again in a heartbeat! This was the first project I was brought into from the very first meeting, so I had a lot of time (before even touching designs) to research and understand the business’ requirements and their users. Throughout this project, I used the SCQA framework method to help me solve underlying or new issues that popped up.
